These encouraging words were spoken by Mrs. Betty Kalloh, one of many women who have felt the strong impact of your support in Sierra Leone. Just a few short years ago, we funded the women’s group of Njala Komboya to help improve the health of their children. They received cows, farming tools and training, vegetable seeds, instruction on health monitoring and access to health care for their children. Today, their children's health has improved dramatically, the cows have increased in number from 10 to 17, healthy vegetables are growing well with environmentally friendly methods to fight pests (ashes for caterpillars) and to fertilize (cow dung), and adult literacy classes have continued with the help of a secondary school teacher from the village. The women’s group is doing so well that it has been selected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security of Sierra Leone to be involved in an animal husbandry project. “We can now be proud of ourselves,” says Betty. Program Manager for Bolivia and Ethiopia, Steven Rotter (left), stands with a proud farmer in her teff field in Akaki-Kality, outside Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Implemented with our local partner, EDA, our Small Farmer Project provides agricultural training, fertilizer, seeds (teff or wheat), and herbicide. Most families in the area lack the resources to engage in profitable cultivation of their land so usually rent it out for a small income. Thanks to the project, funded by our supporters and, in particular, the Howick Foundation, many turn a far greater profit by using our help to work it themselves. See photo gallery of our childhood support programs.
