A Place to Learn
While on a monitoring trip to Ghana this past April, Director of Programs Caroline Chikoore brought back stories and pictures of the newly renovated classroom blocks at Sobriya Basic School. This extension has meant that children previously denied enrolment because of overcrowding are now able to attend class in a cleaner, safer and better ventilated environment. Constructed with the community and through our partnership with RAINS, the new classroom is making a difference with teachers, parents and, most of all, students. |

Progress in Haiti
Months after the January earthquake devastated Haiti, some families in the Port-au-Prince area whose houses were left intact are starting to move out of tents and slowly returning home. Program Manager Bella Lam believes Haitians have been slow to return home because of the aftershocks and the psychological impact resulting from the trauma. Thanks to your support, we provided urgent emergency support, and are now working with our local partners on rehabilitation programs to support the people of Haiti as they rebuild their homes and lives. |

A Life Transformed
Regina, a widow caring for seven children on her own in Bugiri, Uganda, recently experienced a life transformation. Together with our community partner, UCOBAC, Regina worked to improve her home. They built a latrine, constructed a cooking area and put mosquito nets to work to protect her family against malaria. She learned how to grow nutritious food, feed her children a balanced diet and maintain good hygiene. The health and prospects of her children have improved dramatically, and Regina is a new woman with renewed confidence. |

Going Green in Ghana
Environmental clubs in Northern Ghana are educating children on the importance of understanding and caring for their local environment. They take part in tree planting, role plays, clean-up exercises and quiz competitions. The head teacher, Sumaila Yakubu, says: “The environment is very vital to human existence therefore inculcating into the younger generation the need to protect the environment is an issue that everyone should take as his or her responsibility.” Read how we are helping children thrive - From the Ground Up. |

Change in Leadership
After seven years, Jim Dahl has stepped down as Executive Director of Canadian Feed The Children. Board Chair Anne Marie Turnbull worked closely with Jim over the years and recently announced his retirement, summing up his impact on the charity: “Under Jim’s inspired leadership, the organization has strengthened and grown, and has become highly respected as an organization that supports effective sustainable development programs for children, their families and communities.” Debra Kerby (above) has joined us as Executive Director, bringing a wealth of experience in both the private and public sectors. “The board has been involved in an exhaustive search to find a worthy successor for Jim,” says Anne Marie. “Jim’s are very big shoes to fill, but we have landed on an outstanding woman for the job.” Formerly Chief International Programs & Policy Officer at Right to Play, Debra is impressed with Canadian Feed The Children’s reputation in the field of international development and is honoured to accept this important role. “Every day, I continue to be impressed with our partners and programs, and the people behind them,” says Debra. “I am looking forward to getting to know our supporters and the children and communities we support together.”
