LET THE WATER FLOW
The area just outside of Leogane, Haiti, is a beehive of activity these days, as CFTC begins work on a new CIDA-funded irrigation project. For the next nine months, CFTC will work jointly with Service Oecumenique d’Entraide (SOE) and the University of Notre Dame d’Haiti (UNDH) to create an irrigation system in this community, hit hard by the 2010 earthquake and still largely rubble.
CFTC’s focus will be to repair the siphon that is currently blocked and can no longer carry water needed for irrigation in the area. We will also work closely with the local farmers to develop new farming activities, mostly to produce vegetables. These farmers have seen a drop in quantity and quality of their produce over the past 10 years as a result of their water supply slowly drying up. We are very excited to be part of a project that will increase agricultural production and provide better incomes in this community.
