Bringing together Canadian children and nutritious food leads to increased
levels of health and alertness, greater awareness of nutrition and improved chances of success
in school and life. Our support targets some of the 1.1 million children affected by poverty throughout the country with an increasing focus on Aboriginal communities.
A key criteria for our support requires that services be open
to all children regardless of race, gender, culture, religion,
family background etc. View a map of our Canadian programs (PDF) and our list of partners.
Nourishment Programs
We support child nourishment programs across the country, the
majority of which are high-nutrition school- and community-based
lunch and snack programs. (See video of lunch program at Eel Ground School in NB.) In recent years, Canadian Feed The Children has increased our focus
on Aboriginal children's programs, both on and off reserve, by
partnering with rural organizations and reserve schools in
Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. We are one of the few children’s agencies helping to reduce the impact of poverty on Aboriginal children through nutrition programs.

In addition to providing nutrition support to Aboriginal communities, we have helped extend the excellent technology training for elementary students at Eel Ground School in NB with an innovative after-school multi-media program for high school students. The impact of combining good nutrition with youth opportunities in technology is praised by Kevin Burton of Atlantic Canada's First Nation Help Desk in a letter to our former Program Manager for Canada, Pat Dacey. AppleCheck
After tens years of providing fresh healthy Ontario apples to children in the Toronto Area, our AppleCheck Program ended on December 14, 2009. Over its history, AppleCheck has brought fresh apples into the small hands of thousands of nursery and school-aged children, introducing an important, potentially life-long habit of healthy food choices.
Lean resources in a challenging economy is the primary factor in the difficult decision to close the program. We regret that this closure must happen at this time, and we wish our community partners well in continuing to provide outstanding support to children.
Mike, our AppleCheck driver says: "This work experience has been great - from the friendly people in the office to the many children I see every day. I will miss seeing their little faces light up with joy when they see "the apple man" walk through the door. This was by far the best job I've had because I did feel like I was making a difference in children's lives."
We close the AppleCheck program in appreciation of all who have helped bring apples and youngsters together, with special thanks to the children who have expressed their enthusiasm with inspiring letters of thanks: “All the apples you picked and delivered were juicy and delicious and of course yummy.”
