Country Overview

Sharing a border with the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola, the country of Haiti is made up of rugged mountains, coastal plains and river valleys. Its official languages are French and Haitian Creole. A successful slave rebellion in 1804 led to Haiti’s Independence, making it the first black republic. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, devastated the capital of Port-au-Prince, causing extensive destruction and loss of life. Haiti is ranked as the poorest country in the Americas as per the Human Development Index. The country’s history of poverty, environmental degradation, instability and dictatorship has created great challenges for families dedicated to protecting the health of their children.
