Childhood support leads back to school

Together with our partner Feed The Children Uganda, Canadian Feed The Children began to offer sponsorship in the community of Nansana, Uganda in 1994. That year, Nabukalu Eva, one of the pioneering beneficiaries, was enrolled as a sponsored child at SAPH Integrated Primary School in grade five. She spoke with us this past winter.

Eva had just moved to Nansana to live with her aunt when her parents died. "I had just lost my parents to HIV/AIDS and had no idea where my school fees and other requirements would come from," Eva says. "So I was so happy when my aunt enrolled me in the sponsorship program."

Sponsorship provided school materials, a uniform and school fees, which meant Eva could attend school regularly. Eva's school performance was always good and she sat for her primary leaving exams in 1996. She was able to pass with a first grade mark.

"I was so happy to have passed well but I was not sure of continuing with education" she says.

She then enrolled in Nansana High School where she continued to receive support from the sponsorship program. "I was one of the few lucky children who always had enough books at school."

Eva sat for her Ordinary Level exams in 2000 and passed. At this time her sponsorship ended. She then began at Kaliro Primary Teacher's College. "I was admitted on a government scholarship because I excelled in school," she says, "And I attribute all this to the support I received from the sponsorship program."

Eva completed her teacher training course at the end of 2003 and was given an opportunity to return to SAPH Integrated Primary School. "I am so delighted to teach in my former school," she says, "And help other children achieve their academic goals."

Eva is now married with a healthy one-year-old baby. She says, "Without this help throughout my life, I would have not reached this far."
